After a glorious 17-year production run, Nissan has confirmed it will phase out the R35 GT-R sports car in October this year. North America, one of the last markets where the GT-R was still available, will see its production ends. The GT-R was discontinued in India and Europe in 2022. To commemorate the production end, Nissan USA is releasing two special edition models – the Skyline and Takumi Editions – which were unveiled earlier this year.

Why Nissan GT-R Bids ends it’s production ends

Affectionately known as Godzilla, the current-generation GT-R made its debut in 2007, succeeding the R34 Skyline GT-R. Over the years, Nissan has refreshed it with two major facelifts, several special editions, and performance upgrades to ensure it remained competitive against newer rivals and compliant with evolving regulations across different markets.

This sports car gained significant popularity in the tuning community, with some modified versions producing over 1000hp; one such example even exists in India. In its stock form, the GT-R was powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that delivered 570hp, paired with a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Power was distributed to all four wheels through an AWD system.

The Final Skyline and Takumi Special Editions of the GT-R

The final special edition models of the GT-R are the Skyline Edition and the Takumi Edition. The GT-R Skyline Edition is distinguished by its exclusive Bayside Blue exterior paint and blue interiors. Meanwhile, the T-spec Takumi Edition honors the master craftspeople, known as takumi, who hand-assemble each GT-R engine. This edition features a Midnight Purple exterior with a Mori Green interior. The engine bay includes a gold VIN plate with red-etched writing, paying tribute to the dedicated takumi. Both models are equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes, gold RAYS forged wheels, and wider front fenders.

A direct successor to the iconic GT-R is unlikely. Although Nissan introduced the Hyper Force electric concept in October 2023 as a preview of the next-generation GT-R with an all-electric drivetrain, it is expected to be released only by the end of this decade. The GT-R was sold in India from 2016 to 2022 and will be fondly remembered as the everyday sports car.

Why is Nissan Ending GT-R Production?

Nissan is concluding GT-R production due to several factors. The automotive industry is undergoing rapid changes, with stricter emissions regulations and an increasing focus on electric vehicles (EVs). The GT-R, with its powerful internal combustion engine, struggles to meet these new standards. Additionally, consumer demand is shifting towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly vehicles. Nissan is likely reallocating resources to develop new technologies and models, including the anticipated all-electric successor to the GT-R, in line with the industry’s future direction.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Nissan GT-R, affectionately known as Godzilla, has had an illustrious 17-year run since its debut in 2007, evolving through facelifts, special editions, and performance upgrades to stay competitive. Renowned in the tuning community and beloved as an everyday sports car, the GT-R will be remembered for its powerful 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 engine and AWD system. As Nissan phases out the GT-R with the final Skyline and Takumi Editions, marking its production ends, it signifies the conclusion of an era. Facing stricter emissions regulations and shifting market demands towards electric vehicles, Nissan is transitioning its focus to new technologies, with the Hyper Force electric concept hinting at the future of high-performance sports cars.
