Suzuki e Vitara: Maruti's First All-Electric SUV Set for India Launch in 2025
SHARE

The Suzuki e Vitara has been unveiled as Maruti’s first-ever electric vehicle (EV) for India. Debuting in Milan, the e Vitara is based on the Maruti eVX concept and is set to hit Indian roads in March 2025 after an Indian debut at the Bharat Mobility Show in January 2025. This midsize SUV marks Maruti Suzuki’s entry into the competitive EV segment, featuring cutting-edge technology and design elements that align with global standards.

Maruti e Vitara: A Global Launch with Local Appeal

Suzuki chose Milan for the e Vitara’s global reveal, emphasizing its international focus. Despite the Italian debut, production will take place in Suzuki’s Gujarat plant, India. The e Vitara will cater to both domestic and international markets, with 50% of the production earmarked for export to Europe and Japan. Following the Indian launch in March 2025, a European debut is expected by June 2025.

Design and Dimensions: True to the eVX Concept

The Maruti e Vitara stays faithful to the eVX concept presented at the Auto Expo 2023. It retains the rugged and muscular design, with dark cladding around the base adding a robust look. The SUV’s conventional two-box design remains, prioritizing a sturdy appearance rather than aerodynamic efficiency.

Key Design Features:

  • Tri-slash LED daytime running lights
  • Front charging ports
  • 19-inch wheels on AWD versions; 18-inch alloys on lower trims
  • Unique C-pillar rear door handle placement

With dimensions of 4,275mm length, 1,800mm width, and 1,635mm height, the e Vitara rivals the Hyundai Creta EV in size. Its 2,700mm wheelbase is designed to accommodate a larger battery pack, promising a spacious cabin.

Battery, Range, and Performance of Suzuki e Vitara

The Maruti e Vitara will feature two battery options:

  1. 49kWh Battery (2WD): Single motor with 144hp, delivering an estimated range of 350-400 km.
  2. 61kWh Battery (2WD and AWD): Offers 174hp with the single motor, while the dual-motor AWD version produces a combined 184hp and 300Nm torque.

The larger battery option is expected to deliver over 500 km on global test cycles, making it one of the longest-range EVs in its segment. The SUV uses LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) ‘blade’ cells sourced from BYD, a leading Chinese battery manufacturer. Notably, Maruti will import the entire battery pack rather than assembling it locally.

Advanced Platform: Heartect-e with AllGrip-e AWD

The e Vitara is built on Suzuki’s all-new Heartect-e platform, co-developed with Toyota. This skateboard architecture is designed specifically for EVs, integrating eAxles that combine the motor and inverter. The AllGrip-e AWD system enhances traction, especially in challenging terrains, using a Trail mode that simulates a limited-slip differential for optimal power distribution.

Interior and Features: A Leap Forward for Maruti

The interior of the Suzuki e Vitara signifies a big upgrade from Maruti’s existing models, featuring a contemporary design and enhanced technology.

Interior Highlights:

  • Dual-screen infotainment and instrument console
  • Floating centre console with gloss black finish
  • Flat-bottom steering wheel and rotary drive selector
  • Generous headroom and legroom due to a high roof and long wheelbase

The e Vitara will offer a range of premium features such as wireless phone charging, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, electronic parking brake with auto hold, drive modes, and side and curtain airbags. ADAS features like Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Keep Assist are also expected.

Maruti Suzuki e Vitara Price and Launch Timeline

Originally set for an October 2024 launch, the release of the e Vitara was delayed due to technical challenges, particularly in software development. Maruti aims to deliver a reliable and user-friendly EV, prioritizing quality and efficiency. The expected price range for the Maruti e Vitara is:

  • 49kWh 2WD version: Starting at Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom)
  • 61kWh 2WD version: Around Rs 25 lakh
  • 61kWh AWD version (AllGrip-e): Up to Rs 30 lakh

These competitive prices place the e Vitara in direct competition with the Tata Curvv EV, MG ZS EV, Hyundai Creta EV, and Mahindra BE 05.

Conclusion

The Suzuki e Vitara is a significant milestone for Maruti Suzuki, marking its entry into the electric vehicle market. With its advanced platform, impressive range, and robust design, the e Vitara is poised to set a new standard for midsize electric SUVs in India. As Maruti’s first-ever electric vehicle, it aims to combine the practicality and reliability the brand is known for, while offering cutting-edge technology and a feature-rich experience. With a launch set for March 2025, the e Vitara is expected to make a strong impact, paving the way for a series of upcoming EV models from Maruti Suzuki.
