Reviewing the Aera 5000+: Matter's Unique Geared EV

In the ever-evolving landscape of electric vehicles, the Matter Aera 5000+ stands out as a bold departure from the norm. This unconventional two-wheeler from the Gujarat-based startup, Matter, has dared to challenge conventional wisdom by combining cutting-edge EV technology with a traditional four-speed gearbox.

All about Matter’s Aera 5000+

Design and Build Quality

At first glance, the Matter Aera 5000+ bears a striking resemblance to traditional motorcycles. The electric motor and gearbox are strategically positioned where one would expect to find a conventional engine, creating a sense of familiarity. The wide tank panels and overall bodywork further reinforce the traditional aesthetic, reminding us of popular models like the Apaches and Xtremes.

However, upon closer inspection, the Aera 5000+ reveals its modern and advanced nature. The standout feature is the large 7-inch TFT display, which dwarfs the instrument consoles found on most other bikes. The vibrant graphics and well-designed layout convey a sense of sophistication and technological prowess.

While the design elements successfully blend tradition and modernity, the build quality of the pre-production units we tested left room for improvement. Inconsistent panel gaps and finish quality were evident, reminding us that Matter still has work to do in refining the production process.

Ride and Performance

Firing up the Matter Aera 5000+ and taking it for a spin is an experience like no other. The presence of a four-speed gearbox immediately sets it apart from the seamless, twist-and-go nature of most electric vehicles.

Engaging the clutch, selecting gears, and managing the transmission feels familiar yet oddly out of place in an EV.

In the right gear and at the right speed, the Aera 5000+ delivers brisk performance. Matter claims a top speed of 105 km/h and a 0-60 km/h acceleration time of under 6 seconds in Sport mode. The mid-level City mode, with a top speed of 80 km/h, is well-suited for urban commuting.

However, the gearbox can be a double-edged sword. Attempting quick overtakes or accelerating in the wrong gear results in sluggish response, requiring downshifts to unleash the bike’s full potential. This counterintuitive process contradicts the essence of what makes EVs so enjoyable to ride – the instant torque and seamless acceleration.

Riding Dynamics and Comfort

With a curb weight of 169 kg, the Matter Aera 5000+ is a hefty machine, nearly 30 kg heavier than the Tork Kratos and 50-60 kg heavier than electric scooters like the Revolt RV400. This added heft, combined with the motor, gearbox, and chain drive, contributes to increased noise levels compared to other EVs.

On most roads, the ride quality is decent, but larger bumps and speed breakers reveal an underdamped suspension at both ends, causing the rider to pitch out of the seat. The brakes, consisting of discs at both ends with single-channel ABS, offer adequate stopping power, but the initial bite on the front brake feels dull, requiring a firm pull for quick stops.

Battery and Range

The Matter Aera 5000+ is equipped with a 5 kWh battery pack, the largest in its class. However, despite this sizable pack and features like liquid cooling, the claimed range of 125 km in Eco mode is not groundbreaking. The added weight and complexity of the gearbox and liquid cooling system likely contribute to this modest range.

Pricing and Availability of Aera 5000+

Matter plans to commence production by the end of this quarter or early next quarter, with initial deliveries starting in Ahmedabad. The company aims to establish dealerships in 100 cities across India by the end of the current financial year.

The Matter Aera 5000 is priced at Rs 1.74 lakh, while the top-of-the-line Aera 5000+ carries a price tag of Rs 1.84 lakh. This positions the Aera 5000+ competitively against petrol motorcycles like the Yamaha R15, Karizma XMR, and Honda CB300F, as well as the Tork Kratos R.

Matter’s Aera 5000+: Verdict

The Matter Aera 5000+ is a bold experiment in bridging the gap between traditional motorcycles and electric vehicles. Its unique gearbox and liquid-cooled powertrain offer a riding experience unlike any other EV on the market. However, this unconventional approach also comes with trade-offs, such as increased weight, complexity, and a learning curve for riders accustomed to the seamless nature of most electric vehicles.

Ultimately, the success of the Matter Aera 5000+ will depend on the company’s ability to refine the production process, address quality issues, and captivate customers with its unconventional concept. For riders seeking a familiar yet futuristic riding experience, the Aera 5000+ presents an intriguing option that dares to challenge conventions in the pursuit of sustainable mobility.
