Skoda Officially Names Its Upcoming Sub-Compact SUV as ‘Kylaq’

Skoda Auto India has officially named its upcoming sub-4-meter SUV the ‘Kylaq,’ marking the company’s highly anticipated re-entry into the competitive sub-compact SUV segment. This announcement follows months of speculation, with the Kylaq having been spotted testing multiple times and teased in design sketches earlier this year. Slated for a 2025 launch, the Kylaq is poised to become one of the most affordable models in Skoda’s portfolio, targeting a segment dominated by the likes of the Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Brezza, and Tata Nexon.

Skoda Auto India’s Kylaq: A Return to the Sub-4-Metre Segment

The Kylaq’s debut will signal Skoda’s return to India’s sub-4-metre SUV market, a space it hasn’t competed in since the discontinuation of the Rapid in 2021. Skoda’s decision to enter this segment reflects the growing demand for compact, affordable SUVs in the country, and the Kylaq is set to become the smallest offering from Skoda in India since the Fabia hatchback.

Skoda Kylaq: Built on a Proven Platform

The Kylaq will be built on the MQB A0 IN platform, a localized version of the MQB platform that underpins Skoda’s popular Kushaq and Slavia models, as well as Volkswagen’s Taigun and Virtus. This platform is specifically tailored for the Indian market, ensuring that the Kylaq will have design and feature similarities with its larger siblings. The MQB A0 IN platform’s adaptability and proven success in the Indian market bode well for the Kylaq’s performance.

Design Highlights: A Blend of Style and Functionality

Skoda has teased the Kylaq’s design through various sketches and images, revealing key elements that are sure to catch the eye. The SUV’s rear design, showcased in a July 2024 teaser, highlights features such as L-shaped tail lights, flared wheel arches, and prominent Skoda branding across the tailgate. Other notable design elements include an integrated roof-mounted spoiler, roof rails, and Skoda’s signature grille paired with LED daytime running lights and bumper-mounted headlight housing.

These design cues suggest that the Kylaq will maintain Skoda’s reputation for creating stylish and functional vehicles. The compact SUV is expected to have a shorter wheelbase than the Kushaq, making it more agile and suited for urban driving.

Powertrain and Performance: Efficient and Capable

Under the hood, the Kylaq is likely to be powered by a 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine, a powertrain shared with other models in Skoda’s lineup. This engine is expected to be paired with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission, providing drivers with a balance of efficiency and performance.

Given the Kylaq’s expected positioning in the sub-Rs 10 lakh segment, Skoda aims to offer a compelling mix of value, features, and driving dynamics to appeal to a wide range of customers.

Competition: Taking on Established Players

The Skoda Kylaq will enter a fiercely competitive market, going head-to-head with established players like the Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Brezza, and Tata Nexon. Each of these rivals has carved out a significant share of the market, making the Kylaq’s entry all the more significant. Skoda will need to differentiate the Kylaq through its design, features, and pricing strategy to capture the attention of potential buyers.

Conclusion: A New Era for Skoda in India

The Skoda Kylaq represents a bold step for the brand as it aims to make a strong impact in the sub-compact SUV segment. With its official launch expected in 2025, the Kylaq is set to offer a fresh option for customers seeking a stylish, feature-rich, and affordable SUV. As Skoda continues to localize its offerings to better suit the Indian market, the Kylaq could become a key player in the brand’s lineup, helping Skoda capture a larger share of the growing compact SUV market in India.
