After Two Years, Mercedes GLB Gets Discontinued in India

The Mercedes-Benz GLB, once the most affordable 7-seater luxury SUV in India, has officially been discontinued. The German automaker confirmed that all allocations for the Indian market have been completed, and every unit brought into the country has been sold.

Mercedes GLB Was Brought to India as a CBU

Launched in December 2022, the GLB was imported as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) from Mercedes’ Mexico plant. With a price range of ₹63.80 lakh to ₹69.80 lakh (ex-showroom), it offered a relatively accessible entry into the 7-seater luxury SUV segment, undercutting rivals like the Land Rover Discovery Sport.

Variants and Engine Options

The GLB was available in both petrol and diesel options:

  • GLB 200 Progressive: 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine (163hp, 250Nm) with front-wheel drive and 7-speed DCT.
  • GLB 220d 4Matic / AMG Line: 2.0-litre diesel engine (190hp, 400Nm), AWD, 8-speed automatic transmission.

Despite a decent feature list and the appeal of seven seats, the GLB didn’t quite become a volume mover for Mercedes.

EQB Continues to Sell

Interestingly, the all-electric sibling – the Mercedes EQB – remains on sale. Also launched in December 2022, the EQB got a facelift in July 2024 and is available in 250+ and 350 variants, priced at ₹72.20 lakh and ₹78.90 lakh respectively.

Facelifted GLB Yet to Arrive in India

Mercedes gave the GLB a mid-cycle update globally in March 2023. The facelift featured redesigned bumpers, a new grille, interior upgrades, and the addition of 48V mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines. However, this updated version has not yet been launched in India.

New-Gen Mercedes GLB in the Works

Mercedes has confirmed that a new GLB is being considered for India. While it’s unclear if this refers to the 2023 facelift or the next-generation model, spy shots of the latter have already surfaced online. The new-gen GLB is expected to debut globally in 2026 and will be based on the MMA platform – the same as the upcoming third-gen CLA, which is expected to arrive in India by end-2025.

Final Thoughts

While the discontinuation of the GLB marks the end of a short chapter in India’s luxury SUV space, it’s clear that Mercedes isn’t done with the 7-seater segment. Whether it’s a facelift or a brand-new GLB, fans can expect a more advanced and tech-forward SUV in the near future.

Stay tuned for more updates as Mercedes reshapes its entry-level luxury SUV lineup for India.
