Bajaj Auto has officially resumed production of its Chetak electric scooter after a brief pause caused by the shortage of rare earth magnets sourced from China. The scarcity had impacted several EV manufacturers in India, with Bajaj’s output dropping to just under 11,000 units in July 2025, leading to lower sales in August.
Supply Chain Issues Resolved
On August 20, 2025, Bajaj restarted full-scale manufacturing of the Chetak, well ahead of schedule. According to the company, supply chain disruptions linked to international component shortages had temporarily affected deliveries. However, Bajaj has now secured sufficient supplies of rare earth magnets and related components, ensuring uninterrupted availability as the festive season begins.
Rising Demand for the Bajaj Chetak
Eric Vas, President of the Urbanite Business Unit at Bajaj Auto, emphasized that demand for the Chetak remains strong despite the production hiccup. He added, “We appreciate our customers’ patience. Demand for Chetak remains robust, supplies have normalised, and deliveries against bookings have commenced.”
Bajaj Chetak Line-Up and Pricing
The Bajaj Chetak is currently available in four variants – 3001, 3501, 3502, and 3503. Prices range from ₹1.02 lakh to ₹1.35 lakh (ex-showroom), with the Chetak 3001 being the most affordable option. The scooter has become one of the most popular electric two-wheelers in India, blending modern design, practicality, and performance.
Electric Two-Wheeler Sales Battle Heats Up
The temporary pause in production has impacted Bajaj’s sales figures in August. As of August 22, 2025, Bajaj sold just over 11,000 units of the Chetak, putting it in direct competition with Ather Energy, which has also sold nearly the same number. Meanwhile, Ola Electric registered 10,380 units, and TVS continued to dominate with over 17,000 electric scooters sold during the same period.
Closing Thoughts
The resumption of Bajaj Chetak’s production comes at a critical time, just as the festive season is about to begin. With supply issues resolved, Bajaj is set to scale up manufacturing to meet growing demand and strengthen its position in India’s highly competitive electric two-wheeler market. For buyers, this means faster deliveries, better availability, and renewed confidence in one of India’s most trusted EVs.
