Although the E-Class lineage dates back quite far, it was truly solidified with the rebranding of the W124 in the 1990s. Notably, this model also marked the official entry of Mercedes-Benz into the Indian market, and since then, the brand has continued to flourish. The E-Class, a global success, became a defining model for Mercedes-Benz in India, gaining immense popularity over the years. After being unveiled internationally last year, the latest E-Class returns to India in its Long Wheelbase (LWB) version. Here’s a look at the key updates compared to its predecessor.

India welcomes the 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Though the E-Class legacy is longstanding, it truly took shape with the rebranding of the W124 in the 1990s. This model also marked Mercedes-Benz’s official entry into the Indian market, a milestone that set the stage for the brand’s continued success in India. Over the years, the E-Class has become a hallmark of Mercedes-Benz in the country, gaining widespread popularity. Now, after its international debut last year, the latest E-Class arrives in India in its Long Wheelbase (LWB) version. Here’s how it has evolved from its predecessor.

Dimensions

As expected, the new E-Class is larger than before. Its overall length has increased by 14 mm, primarily contributing to a 15 mm longer wheelbase. The previous model was already close to S-Class dimensions, and this version gets even closer. Additionally, it is now about 13 mm taller and wider than the previous model. The only unchanged feature is the tyre size, which remains at 18 inches, with a single five-spoke alloy design.

  • Dimensions: 5092x1880x1493 mm
  • Wheelbase: 3094 mm
  • Height: 1493 mm
  • Tyres: 225/55 R18
  • Boot Capacity: 510 litres

Exterior

The new E-Class maintains a blend of contemporary design and classic appeal. It features a star-pattern grille with a single horizontal louvre and the iconic three-pointed star logo. Unlike its predecessor, the new model will only be available in the Avantgarde body style, with no AMG Line option at launch. The updated design includes complex headlights extending to the side fender and a chrome-lined lower lip. The long bonnet, power domes, and shorter boot retain the classic saloon proportions, while flush door handles and Maybach S-Class-style rear quarter glass add a modern touch. The rear features split tail lamps with cool 3D star lights.

Powertrains

The new E-Class LWB will offer both petrol and diesel engines, upgrading from the previous E200 and E220d specs. The 48V mild-hybrid system provides an additional 23 bhp and up to 205 Nm of torque for short bursts, enhancing both efficiency and performance. The petrol engine is a 2.0-litre inline-four (M254) producing approximately 195 bhp, with improved emissions control. The diesel engine, also 2.0-litre inline-four (OM645M), delivers just over 200 bhp and features technologies from Formula 1 for enhanced performance and reduced turbo lag. Both engines are paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission, offering varying driving modes for improved efficiency and performance.

Interior

The new E-Class features a larger cabin thanks to the extended wheelbase. Rear seat comfort is enhanced with a 10-degree recline option and powered base extenders for additional support. The rear floor has a prominent centre tunnel, but the centre armrest, which includes cup holders and a wireless charger, adds convenience. Motorised sun blinds and a panoramic sunroof further enhance comfort. The rear also introduces a ‘chauffeur package’ allowing the rear left seat to extend for added luxury. Up front, the E-Class boasts an all-new steering wheel and dashboard with three screens, including a 14.4-inch central infotainment display and a co-passenger screen. The third-generation MBUX system supports various apps and features a selfie camera for video streaming.

First Impressions

With the previous E-Class priced at Rs 73 lakh for the E200 and Rs 76 lakh for the E200d (ex-showroom), the new generation is expected to see a price increase, likely between Rs 80-83 lakh. The 6th generation E-Class remains true to the essence of the original W124 while offering significant improvements. It promises to maintain the plush limousine feel that the E-Class is known for. We’ll provide a detailed drive review soon. Stay tuned.

Conclusion

The arrival of the 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class in India marks a significant evolution of a model that has long been synonymous with luxury and refinement. Building on the legacy of the iconic W124 from the 1990s, this new generation offers a larger, more sophisticated package with enhanced dimensions, modern design features, and advanced powertrains. The introduction of the Long Wheelbase (LWB) version promises to deliver an elevated driving experience and greater comfort. As Mercedes-Benz continues to build on its success in India, the latest E-Class aims to uphold its reputation as a premier choice in the luxury sedan segment. With updated features and a refined design, this new E-Class is poised to impress both long-time enthusiasts and new customers alike.
