The iconic Scout brand is making a comeback, this time with an all-electric approach. Volkswagen’s revived Scout brand has unveiled its first two models, the Traveler SUV and the Terra pick-up, both designed to honor the heritage of the original International Harvester Scout while introducing cutting-edge electric vehicle (EV) technology. Here’s a closer look at these upcoming models set to hit production lines in 2027.

All-Electric Traveler SUV and Terra Pick-Up Truck

A Nod to the Past with Modern Touches

The Traveler and Terra models both reflect the distinct, boxy aesthetic of the original International Harvester Scout, a beloved off-roader from the 1960s and ’70s. The new designs are boxy, with a strong shoulder line, angular pillars, and rugged flared wheel arches. Each model is equipped with modern quad-projector headlamps, integrated LED daytime running lights, and a unique wrap-around tail-lamp design.

Both the Traveler and Terra will come with up to 35-inch off-road tires, emphasizing their serious off-road intent. The Traveler features a tailgate-mounted spare, while the Terra pick-up offers an underbody spare tire or a bed-mounted carrier for a full-size spare, catering to adventurous drivers who need reliable off-road capabilities.

Powertrain Options: All-Electric and Range-Extended EV

In a departure from its predecessors, the new Scouts will be fully electric, with an available range-extender option that includes a small petrol generator to support longer trips. The all-electric models have a targeted range of 560 km, while the range-extender version aims to increase this to over 800 km. Both the Traveler and Terra will be equipped with four-wheel drive powered by electric motors on each axle, providing remarkable torque and off-road capability, including the ability to climb 100 percent grades.

The powertrain supports an impressive towing capacity of over 4,500 kg and a payload capacity around 900 kg, setting it up as a strong contender in the electric SUV and pick-up market.

Interior Features: Classic Inspiration Meets Modern Technology

Scout’s cabin design draws inspiration from the classic Scout models but integrates modern amenities for a comfortable driving experience. The digital instrument cluster sits behind the steering wheel and is paired with a large central touchscreen for easy access to infotainment. Beneath the central display, a row of physical switches offers quick access to frequently used functions, adding a practical touch.

Scout will offer two seating configurations for both models, with either a front bench seat or a front center console, enhancing the storage options and accommodating a variety of driver needs.

Built for Off-Road Adventures

Both the Traveler and Terra feature 800V architecture, enabling fast charging speeds of up to 350 kW, making these EVs ideal for long journeys and quick stops. To ensure exceptional off-road capability, Scout has equipped both models with front and rear lockers and a front sway bar disconnect function, allowing for greater maneuverability and traction on rugged terrains.

With peak torque of over 1300 Nm, the Traveler and Terra are designed to meet the demands of challenging terrains, ensuring a seamless blend of power and durability.

Conclusion: A Bold New Chapter for Scout

The revival of the Scout brand marks an exciting moment for off-road enthusiasts and EV supporters alike. The all-electric Traveler SUV and Terra pick-up combine nostalgic design with high-performance electric capabilities, catering to a new generation of adventurers while honoring Scout’s iconic heritage. With production set for 2027, these models are set to redefine the EV landscape, bringing the spirit of Scout to a new era.
