The all-new Mercedes GLC EV is set to make its grand debut at the Munich Motor Show in September, serving as the indirect replacement for the EQC SUV. Unlike past EVs, Mercedes is now focusing on integrating EVs alongside their internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts. The GLC EV will be sold alongside the facelifted combustion-engined GLC in international markets, with both versions featuring near-identical designs inside and out.

All about Mercedes GLC EV

Revolutionary MB.EA Platform & Powertrain Options

The GLC EV will be the first model based on the new MB.EA platform, which will also underpin future all-electric models, including the upcoming C-Class EV and a compact electric G-Class. Additionally, it is the first to incorporate Mercedes’ eATS 2.0 drivetrain, which was previewed by the Vision EQXX concept.

Mercedes will offer the GLC EV in two powertrain options:

  • Single-motor RWD: 272hp
  • Dual-motor AWD: 490hp

The 94.5kWh NMC battery provides a driving range of over 650km per charge, operating on an advanced 800V architecture that enables ultra-fast 320kW charging speeds. This means the EV can gain 260km of range in just 10 minutes.

Cutting-Edge Technology for Enhanced Efficiency

Mercedes is equipping the GLC EV with next-gen innovations, making it one of the most advanced electric SUVs:

  • New Heat Pump: A more compact and effective heat pump improves efficiency and allows for a larger frunk.
  • Brake Energy Recuperation System: A revolutionary braking setup decouples the brake pedal from the physical braking system, offering a natural feel while enhancing energy recovery.

Mercedes’ Shift in EV Strategy

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius is steering the company toward a unified EV-ICE lineup, reducing differentiation between powertrains to drive EV adoption. This approach streamlines development, reduces costs, and ensures a smoother transition for buyers shifting from ICE to EV models.

The GLC EV will compete against the Audi Q6 e-tron, BMW iX3, and Porsche Macan Electric in international markets. Production will take place in Bremen, Germany, and Beijing, China, with possible expansion to Tuscaloosa, US.

Will the Mercedes GLC EV Come to India?

While there is no official confirmation regarding an India launch, Mercedes has four new models planned for the Indian market this year. The current-gen GLC, available in mild-hybrid petrol and diesel variants, has been on sale in India since 2023, with the AMG GLC 43 4MATIC Coupe joining the lineup in August 2024.
