Hyundai is all set to introduce the Bayon compact SUV in the Indian market in mid-2026, and it will feature a brand-new 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine developed specifically for India. The Bayon, built on the i20 platform, is Hyundai’s answer to the Maruti Suzuki Fronx and aims to strengthen its foothold in the competitive subcompact SUV segment.
All about Hyundai Bayon
New Turbo-Petrol Engine: Power Meets Efficiency
The Bayon will debut Hyundai’s locally-built 1.2-litre 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, positioned between the existing 1.0L and 1.5L turbo units. This engine is expected to offer better drivability and torque than the current 1.0L (120hp, 172Nm), while being more fuel-efficient than the 1.5L (160hp, 253Nm).
Additionally, the engine is hybrid-ready, aligning with Hyundai’s long-term electrification goals. Transmission options may include a dual-clutch automatic (DCT) or e-CVT, depending on the model.
Dual Engine Options Expected
While the new 1.2L turbo-petrol engine will headline the India-spec Bayon, Hyundai may also offer the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine seen in international markets, mated to a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT gearbox. The upcoming engine is also expected to power the next-gen Venue and future models in the Rs 15–20 lakh bracket.
Stylish and Futuristic Exterior
The Bayon takes design cues from the new Hyundai Verna, featuring a split-headlamp setup, a wide honeycomb-patterned grille, and sporty black cladding with silver accents. On the sides, it boasts 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, while the rear is highlighted by boomerang-shaped tail-lamps connected via an LED strip, giving it a bold and modern look.
Premium Interior with Hyundai’s Signature Features
Inside, the Bayon’s cabin is loaded with features, including:
- 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen
- 10.25-inch digital driver’s display
- Wireless charging & fast USB Type-C ports
- Bose 8-speaker sound system
- ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems)
- Connected car tech & OTA updates
- 411-litre boot space
The all-black interior and familiar four-spoke steering wheel offer a premium yet functional appeal.
Closing Thoughts
With its modern design, feature-packed interior, and the introduction of a brand-new 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, the Hyundai Bayon is shaping up to be a strong contender in India’s compact SUV market. Slated for a mid-2026 launch, the Bayon not only reinforces Hyundai’s focus on localization and innovation but also sets the stage for a new generation of hybrid-ready turbocharged vehicles.
